Morning Major: The Story Behind Our Magpie Design
As so many things do, the inspiration for this design leans on our childhood memories and our Mum,
She was wonderfully superstitious about magpies. Every sighting came with a cheerful “good morning” or a quick cross on the top right of the windscreen, if she was driving! These little rituals were part of everyday life, done without much thought, but filled with care.
Magpies are strong, striking, and full of character; they felt like the perfect starting point for a design that celebrates optimism and everyday magic.
And then there was the mustard.
There was always a tin of Coleman’s in the kitchen cupboard when we were growing up. That bold mustard yellow was a constant, practical, familiar, and proudly British. When it came to choosing colours for this collection, it felt inevitable. Warm, confident, and full of life.
At the heart of martha & hepsie is joy. Not the big, showy kind but the joy found in small rituals, inherited habits, and the stories that stay with us.
Our magpie is a design inspired by Mum, by memory, and by the belief that your home should make you smile.
