Some designs don’t just come from an idea; they come from a shared sense of place, a way of seeing the world, and the conversations that happen between us.
Our Puffin began, as many of our designs do, with Martha and Hepsie working together to capture something that feels both rooted and full of character. Hepsie lives in North Devon, where the coastline and the sea shape so much of daily life. Just off that coast sits Lundy, a small island whose name comes from Old Norse, meaning “Puffin Island.” It felt like a natural starting point, a place with history, and a connection to the bird itself.
We’ve always been drawn to puffins. Known as the clowns of the sea, they have a playfulness that we love, a reminder not to take things too seriously. That sense of joy and character is something we try to bring into everything we create, and the puffin seemed to carry that effortlessly.

From the beginning, this design felt special to both of us. What started as a simple idea soon became something much more, a motif that could live across different pieces, telling the same story in different ways. Over time, our Puffin has appeared on kitchen textiles, stationery, and fabrics, becoming one of those designs that quietly grows with us.

Seeing it featured on BBC’s The Repair Shop last year was a proud moment for both of us. It felt like a lovely acknowledgement of not just the design, but the journey behind it the thinking, the place, and the collaboration that shaped it.
We’ve always believed that the things we create should feel meaningful not just in how they look, but in where they come from. The Puffin is a small reflection of that belief. A little story of North Devon, brought to life through our work, and shared with you.
